I bought a pair of Merrel Trail Gloves at the beginning of the season. They’re light, have a good sole, and gave the impression that they would dry quickly. They cost around $100. I thought I’d buy an ideal pair of deck shoes.
One sailing season (and a lot of work) later, I don’t think these shoes fit the bill.
Firstly, the fabric above the shoes breaks easily. In particular, any snagging on fittings will result in a tear. They’re simply not tough enough for the deck. Secondly, the sole is not designed for good grip on deck. Even with a non-skid paint, it adheres very poorly (and is even worse on bilge paint). What’s more, the sole makes a dreadful « squick-squick » noise when wet. Finally, and most surprisingly, the shoe’s cushioning is made of a fabric that favours the growth of bacteria. In short, after getting wet a few times, they end up smelling awful.
On the upside, the shoes do not strip the deck, are indeed light and are comfortable.
Verdict: you can find better shoes.
